James Wan is back directing an original horror film with Malignant, which follows a woman who has terrifying visions only to find out that her horrific dreams are real.
Annabelle Wallis plays a woman with terrifying visions of murders being committed and soon finds out her violent dreams are happening in real-time.
She discovers that the evil force behind the crimes is a supernatural entity called Gabriel and is connected to her past.
Malignant sees James Wan return to developing original horror following his effort on Aquaman (2018).
Wan, of course, is known for his horror films, his career kicking off with the groundbreaking Saw (2004) and then following up with Insidious (2010) and The Conjuring (2013).
All three of those IP’s went on to spawn massive mainstream horror franchises, solidifying the Melbourne native’s place in the horror movie industry as one of the all-time greats.
With Malignant, Wan is looking to introduce a new villain to the horror world in Gabriel, and while we only catch a few glimpses of him in the trailer, there’s potential there to turn this film into a series and feature the character in more movies.
The film feels like a cross between a horror slasher film and a supernatural thriller, and the trailer is suitably terrifying.
We can only hope that Wan has brought some truly original ideas and scares to Malignant, and we’ll find out for sure on 9 September 2021.
