Netflix and… Shhh! I Want to Watch This!

netflix and chill

‘Netflix and chill’ is one of today’s most popular euphemisms playfully used when two adults want to enjoy one another’s company. As per the intentions of Netflix and chill, the chill side of things tends to attract the most emphasis.

Too often than not movies are the ones that suffer. They are neglected and although they bring people together, even a great movie can be unjustly judged in this type of environment.

However, there are movies out there which are so gripping they can make even the most passionate of individuals keep their eyes on the screen, and their hands to themselves.

Those movies are so intense that you just have to know what happens next. With a wealth of movies to choose from, here are six that are currently on Netflix which will make you neglect the chill.

1Inception (2010)

Director: Christopher Nolan

Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Paige, Tom Hardy, Michael Caine

When it comes to mind-f***s, Inception is at the top of the list. What is quite possibly Christopher Nolan’s most impressive film, Inception is one of those movies that will induce a lot of head-scratching because its plot is so complicated.

The methodology to planting ideas in someone’s mind by invading their dreams and creating several layers of different dreams, so that the inception is successful is confusing to the best of us. The film’s originality is overwhelmingly intriguing and from the opening scene, you are guaranteed to be hooked.

Miss a scene or two and your date may be asking ‘what’s going on?’ the whole time, or ‘I thought he was dead?’ – the whole time.

2. American Psycho (2000)

Director: Mary Harron

Staring: Christian Bale, William Dafoe, Jared Leto

American Psycho is one of Christian Bale’s finest performances to date, and it marked a pivotal moment in his career. In the film he plays Patrick Bateman, a young professional working on Wall Street who likes to spend his spare time perfecting his body, perfecting his appearance, listening to music and brutally killing innocent men and women.

The movie gives an amazing commentary on today’s society regarding consumerism and white-collar business, and it’s also an amazing character study revealing some disturbing insight into the mind of a psychopath.

3Snowpiercer (2013)

Director: Bong Joon-ho

Starring: Chris Evans, Jamie Bell, Tilda Swinton

Bong Joon-ho is a master at visual storytelling; his offset tone and unique narratives have given him auteur status after creating only a handful of films. Snowpiercer takes place on a train which holds the only surviving humans on the planet after a second ice-age brought on an apocalypse.

Joon-ho’s films are filled with references to our society and our history. They are complex, imaginative and graphic. The tone he sets can be unsettling, but undoubtedly entertaining. Snowpiercer’s pace and story will have you gripped from the get-go.

4. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Director: George Miller

Starring: Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron

Fury Road is one of the most intense, fast-paced action movies of all time. When George Miller first announced that he would be releasing a new instalment in the Mad Max franchise, it was met with a mixed response. However audiences were pleasantly surprised when they were given a non-stop thrill-ride, which also became one of of the most entertaining films of 2015.

This film is the perfect example of what an action movie should be; an edge-of-your-seat story which propels itself forward and keeps a consistent pace that never drops. The intensity makes the film so entertaining with little to no dull moments where one can have a break from the madness. Mad Max is that good – you shouldn’t complain about neglecting the chill with Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron delivering this much breathtaking action.

5. The Revenant (2015)

Director: Alejandro G. Inarritu

Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy

The film that that earned Leonardo DiCaprio his long-awaited, elusive Oscar win was one of the most inventive movies to come out of Hollywood in the last decade. A story of revenge, there isn’t anything in The Revenant’s script that makes it original, but what makes it unique is how it was made.

The film was shot in natural light and in all-natural locations, giving the cinematography a beautiful feel which is consistent throughout the whole film. This film is all the beauty you will need. Natural light always makes for the best image and The Revenant is truly a cinematic experience. Make sure not to watch this one on a laptop; put it on a big screen to truly appreciate its mastery.

6Sicario (2015)

Director: Denis Villeneuve

Starring: Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, Benicio del Toro

Sicario tells the story of an FBI agent (Emily Blunt) who is sent to Mexico to help take down a Mexican drug cartel. Out of her depth, Blunt’s character is thrust into an ultra-violent, unforgiving world, forced to face death around every turn.

Not only is the story vivid and raw, but the cinematography by Roger Deakins is beautiful. The film’s vulgar nature can be felt through every frame. Sicario is suspenseful from start to finish, holding your attention as the anticipation builds towards its climax.
