After the success of Hereditary (2018), film fans have been anxiously awaiting director Ari Aster’s next movie and if the unnerving trailer for Midsommar is anything to go by, it’s going to be another gripping ride.
American couple Christian (Jack Reynor) and Dani (Florence Pugh) have hit a rough patch in their relationship and are on the verge of breaking up when personal tragedy strikes.
To keep their relationship going, Dani joins Christian and his friends on a trip to a remote Swedish village to celebrate a midsummer festival that only happens every 95 years.
The bad news is that the festival is run by a bunch of sadistic Pagans intent on making the group participate in their brutal and violent rituals.
This is sure to be a chilling psychological horror with spurts of extreme violence and a few jump-scares.
Unlike the dark and gloomy setting of Hereditary, Aster’s gone for a colourful and vibrant approach, setting most of the film during the day, a feat rarely pulled off by horror films.
The extended cast also includes some up-and-coming-stars, including Will Poulter and William Jackson Harper.
Midsommar looks like The Wicker Man (1973) on acid and if it’s half as frightening as Aster’s last film, we’re in for a treat.
It hits cinemas on 8 August 2019.
