Jessica Chastain is barely recognisable as televangelist Tammy Faye in the biographical drama film The Eyes of Tammy Faye.
Through the 1970s and 80s, Faye created the world’s largest religious broadcasting network and theme park alongside her husband, Jim Bakker (Andrew Garfield).
However, their success would not last forever, the pair becoming embroiled in multiple scandals, sending them crashing back down to earth.
The Eyes of Tammy Faye is an astonishing true story of two people using religion for profit and swindling millions from gullible people along the way.
Televangelists are notorious for being dodgy purveyors of the word of God and becoming extremely wealthy off the back of hardworking people.
The film, directed by Michael Showalter, looks full of black comedy with dramatic touches as it charts the rise, fall, and redemption of Tammy Faye.
Showalter’s directing credits include The Lovebirds (2020) and The Big Sick (2017), as well as writing the cult classic comedy film Wet Hot American Summer (2001) and its follow-up Netflix series in 2016.
Chastain looks like she’ll steal the show in this film, in heavy makeup that makes her unrecognisable in a lot of the shots.
Likewise, Andrew Garfield and supporting cast member Vincent D’Onofrio look great in their roles.
The film is due to arrive on 23 September 2021.
