Sandra Bullock takes the lead in the upcoming Netflix original survival-horror film Bird Box, from award-winning director Susanne Bier.
Bullock plays Malorie, a mother of two young children who are forced to make a treacherous trip down a river, blindfolded, to escape an unknown entity that’s been taking the lives of people that come face to face with it.
Not much is shown in the way of the entity referred to above in the trailer, except for some shadowy imagery.
What we know from the trailer is that it’s causing death on a catastrophic scale, and the only way to prevent said death is to not look at it, hence the blindfolds.
The film looks equal parts supernatural, survival and sci-fi horror, and features an excellent cast.
It’s directed by Susanne Bier and based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Josh Malerman.
Bier’s Danish film In a Better World (2010) won the Best Foreign Language Fim award at the 83rd Academy Awards in 2011, and she recently took home a best directing Primetime Emmy award for her work on the TV series The Night Manager.
Bullock is joined by Sarah Paulson, Trevante Rhodes, Jacki Weaver, Rosa Salazar and John Malkovich in supporting roles.
The talent on and off the screen is all there and the trailer is certainly intriguing, though I’m still not entirely sold on the concept (doesn’t seem that original).
Maybe some future trailers will shed more light, and if not, it’s not a long wait until the film’s Netflix release date of 21 December 2018.
