It looks like the Michael Jordan-starring fan-favourite film Space Jam (1996) could be getting a long-awaited sequel.
The second instalment has been in development for some time but has yet to get to the final stages of production.
Filmmaker Justin Lin (of the Fast and Furious series) was initially working on the project in 2016 but it never made it past the discussion stage.
Cut to the present and Space Jam 2 may have gained some momentum as The Wrap reports that Terence Nance is in ‘advanced negotiations’ to direct the project.
Should this officially happen, script-writing duties would be taken up by Andrew Dodge and be produced by Charlie Ebersol.
Considering James is keen to break into Hollywood, his presence in the movie would be a huge ‘lay up’ in setting an official date for production.
Although, Nance would want to officially come on-board soon as the 2018/19 NBA season begins shortly and would have James tied up until April.
If the Lakers qualify for the playoffs (highly likely), James will be busy dropping B-bombs until May/June.
With the huge global reach of the sport of basketball and the massive star power of James (much like Michael Jordan in the original), this film should become a three-pointer from the middle of the court.
The nostalgia factor is high too, as new fans could be brought together with fans of the original, really bouncing up the film appeal.
Let’s hope Lebron makes a slam dunk on the screen as he does on the court!
