Rooney Mara plays the historical figure Mary Magdalene with Joaquin Phoenix joining her in the role of Jesus, in a film by Australian director Garth Davis.
The film follows the story of Mary Magdalene, as she leaves her family to join the Christian movement led by Jesus of Nazareth, on a journey to Jerusalem.
This isn’t a typical, glossy Christmas movie about Mary and Jesus, nor does it appear to be as brutal and raw as Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ (2004).
Mary Magdalene instead looks like it fits somewhere in between, with a grounded look at the spiritual figure and the story of her place in Christian history.
The film looks like it will tell a relatable, humanistic story that will be full of powerful performances from its principal cast, along with its supporting cast that includes Chiwetel Ejiofor and Tahar Rahim.
This is Davis’ follow-up film to his critically acclaimed drama Lion (2016), which starred Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman.
The tone of this film looks like it will follow in the same vein as Lion, which should make for some dramatic, and moving viewing.
It will be interesting to see whether or not this film attempts to preach the Christian message in any way, however judging by this first trailer, it doesn’t appear that it will, which will work in the film’s favour.
Mary Magdalene is due to hit cinemas on 22 March 2018.
