Denzel Washington Features in Dan Gilroy’s ‘Roman J Israel, Esq.’ – Trailer

Roman J Israel

Roman J Israel, Esq. is the second film from director Dan Gilroy, who brought us the outstanding 2014 film, Nightcrawler.

Starring Denzel Washington in the lead role, the film is centered around a lawyer struggling to come to grips with changes within his law film.

As he struggles in a morally corrupt system, he faces an existential crisis which leads to extreme consequences.

The trailer is set to Kendrick Lamar’s song ‘i’, which I think encompasses the movie nicely from what we are told in the trailer.

Not only is the song a total banger, but its selection seems more than just a decision to make the trailer resonate with the fans of Kung Fu Kenny.

The song is chopped as most songs are for trailers, but what I liked was the particular lines they chose to use.

I feel like Kendrick’s lyrics are telling us what the film is about just as much as the visuals we are seeing on screen are.

Or maybe they just wanted a funky-ass trailer?

Another big fat plus for Roman J Israel, Esq. is the fact that it is written and directed by Dan Gilroy, who brought us one my favourite films of 2014 in Nightcrawler.

That alone should convince you to get to the cinema for this one, and it was certainly the selling point for me.

Gilroy has shown that he has what it takes to write complex character studies within creative narratives, and with Denzel Washington at the helm, who knows what type of performance we are going to see.

I have a feeling we may see an award-worthy performance from Denzel yet again.

When I heard him say “It’s an enema of sunshine, sorry for taking a nano second out of your assembly lined rubber stamped existence”, I got the feeling we were in for something special.

What I liked most about this trailer was the mystery; while we get a feel for the story, I really don’t know what it’s about.

I love when a trailer can do this; get me interested and into the cinema without spoiling any of the major moments from the film.

That’s something that modern trailers are missing, a level of ambiguity that doesn’t spoil the film-going experience.

The trailer for Roman J Israel, Esq. left me entertained but slightly oblivious as to what to expect.

The film hits cinemas on 3 November 2017 in the USA.
