Oscar-Winning Actor Daniel Day-Lewis Retires

Triple-Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis, one of the most revered actors of his generation, has said he is retiring from acting.

Leslee Dart, the spokeswoman for the actor has stated:

Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.”

A controlled end to one of the most impressive careers in the industry, his work spans almost fifty years. Well known for the careful consideration of his roles and method acting, he appears to be content in pursuing other commitments and has done so before.

In the 1990’s he took time off from acting to hone his woodworking skills and worked as an apprentice shoemaker in Italy. He also took a sabbatical at his Ireland farm after winning his record-breaking third Best Actor Oscar for Lincoln (2012). His first win was for Jim Sheridan’s My Left Foot (1989).

My favourite role would have to be his second Oscar-winning performance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood (2007), as the intense 20th century oil tycoon Daniel Plainview. We are yet to get a trailer for the second collaboration between Day-Lewis and Anderson, for the upcoming film tentatively titled Phantom Thread. The film is set for a late December release and will be the actor’s last.

A big loss for the industry indeed, leave a Facebook comment below if you’ll miss the actor.
