Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes has decided to shoot his latest film, 1917, as a single-shot feature as showcased in this new video.
1917 is an upcoming WW1 drama film that follows two young British soldiers, played by George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman, on a mission to get word to their compatriots about stopping an attack that is sure to get them killed.
The catch is that they’ll have to venture into enemy territory to do so.
We got a brief look at the film recently in its first trailer, which also teased a tense and phenomenally-looking film.
Sam Mendes has acquired the talents of Roger Deakins to serve as his director of photography, and for those unfamiliar with Deakins’ work, he’s worked as DOP on some amazing films including Mendes’ own Skyfall (2012) and more recently, Blade Runner 2049 (2017), which finally earned him his first Academy Award.
The new video below features the film’s director, cinematographer and some of its cast members talk about the choice to shoot the film in a single-shot style, as well as the challenges that come with it.
A lot of films that use this style of shooting tend to focus on extended scenes, though it’s rarely used for the entire length of a feature due to the difficulties involved.
Despite the hard task at hand, the team behind 1917 brings with it a wealth of experience and award-winning credentials so they should hit the mark with their intended vision.
1917 is due out on 25 December 2019.
