Get Out by director Jordan Peele has become the highest-grossing debut for a writer-director, based on an original screenplay.
The indie horror-thriller film’s budget was $4.5 million (USD) and has earned a whopping $183.5 million (USD) across American and international markets since its release on 24 February 2017.
The film has beaten the record previously held by 1999’s The Blair Witch Project, which earned $140.5 million (USD) from a $60 thousand (USD) budget.
Get Out marks director Jordan Peele’s first writing-directing gig for a feature-length film.
Considering his background in comedy as one half of the comedy duo Key & Peele, makes this achievement even more impressive.
The director (pictured below) also became the first African-American writer-director to make a cool $100 million (USD) from their first film.
I had a chance to watch this film recently (review coming soon) and it was outstanding, and genuinely deserving of such success.
Get Out hits Australian cinemas on 4 May 2017, and it’s best going into it without too much knowledge of the film.
