Acclaimed director Denis Villeneuve has tackled Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi novel Dune and its first trailer looks stunning.
A classic tale of the hero’s journey, Dune follows the story of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), a man born into a noble family with a great destiny, as he travels to a dangerous planet to confront evil forces in a conflict over the planet’s abundant supply of natural resources.
Resources with the power to unlock the greatest potential of humanity.
Frank Herbert’s novel was adapted into a film by iconic director David Lynch in 1984 which didn’t fare well, however, it looks as though director Denis Villeneuve has hit the mark with his version.
Visually, it looks gorgeous, with Villeneuve bringing on Greig Fraser as his DOP, who previously worked on films like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), Vice (2018), and Zero Dark Thirty (2012).
All of those films looked great, but Dune looks to be on another level visually, reminiscent of Villeneuve’s past films such as Arrival (2016) and Blade Runner 2049 (2017).
Story-wise, Dune looks complex based on this first trailer, and Herbert’s book is one that is notoriously hard to read, so it will be interesting to see how Warner Bros have approached the production from a mainstream entertainment perspective, and whether or not people will enjoy it.
The casting is also epic like the film, and alongside Chalamet are Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem in supporting roles.
Dune looks like it has the potential to be a modern classic sci-fi film and is set to hit theatres on 26 December 2020.
