Fans of Robbie’s take on the DC Comics villainess Harley Quinn will be pleased to see her leading the new film, Birds of Prey.
After separating with the Joker, Harley Quinn (Robbie) joins fellow villains/anti-heroes Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) to save a young girl from the evil crime kingpin, Black Mask (Ewan McGregor).
Birds of Prey is an offshoot of 2016’s Suicide Squad and features characters from the DC Comics series of the same name.
Robbie’s Harley Quinn was the best thing about that much-maligned film so it’s great to see her in what is essentially a standalone film for the character.
Judging by the trailer, we can expect to see a lot of the same shenanigans we saw in Suicide Squad from Harley Quinn and Robbie certainly appears to be owning the role.
We don’t get too much by way of the plot in this first trailer as it chooses to focus more on the film’s tone and style, along with some of its quirky humour.
The film is written by Bumblebee (2018) scribe Christina Hodson and is directed by Cathy Yan, who’s directing her sophomore feature following the little-known Dead Pigs (2018).
Birds of Prey looks like it will be a lot of fun and is due out on 7 February 2020.
