The cast and crew of Bumblebee talk about the film’s Gen 1 Transformer designs as well as their love of the property in this new featurette.
It’s 1987 and the Transformer Bumblebee is on the run when he finds refuge in a junkyard of a small Californian beach town.
Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), a teenager on the verge of adulthood finds the robot in disguise and revives him, setting about a turn of events that will see them embark on an epic adventure.
The new featurette below features director Travis Knight and actor John Cena talk about their love of Transformers, and the fond memories they had of the cartoon series and toys that made their debut back in the 80’s.
When the Transformers films first hit the big screen in 2007 with Michael Bay at the helm, they were re-designed to suit a more modern time period.
The designs from the 80’s animated series and toys were crude and boxy, with Bay’s version of them becoming more fluid, with a more alien-robot hybrid type design.
The spinoff film, Bumblebee, takes cues from the 80’s Gen 1 transformer designs, making them a little squarer while keeping with the fluidity of movement we’ve seen in the past films.
It’s a clear tribute to the original, most popular designs of the characters, which should please many fans that grew up with the original Transformer toys and cartoons.
And frankly, they look a lot better than Michael Bay’s modern take.
The new featurette gives us a look a glimpse of the new (old) designs and the inspiration behind them.
Bumblebee releases in cinemas on 20 December 2018 and stars Hailee Steinfeld and John Cena.
