See Will Smith play an elite assassin that’s forced to face a clone of his younger self in Ang Lee’s new sci-fi action film, Gemini Man.
Smith plays Henry Brogen, a former elite government agent who is currently being hunted by the people he once worked for, for reasons unknown as yet.
Being unrivalled in his field, his former employers create and send a clone of Brogen out to assassinate him.
His clone, aptly dubbed ‘Junior’ seems to face somewhat of an existential crisis when he too discovers that the man he’s sent to kill, is him.
This is a pure action sci-fi spectacle film by all means, though there are some interesting underlying themes here.
A crisis of identity and moral issues behind cloning play big parts of the story, which should add a bit of depth to this sci-fi romp.
What stands out the most, however, are the awesome set-pieces as well as impressive visual effects on display.
They were recently highlighted in a behind-the-scenes video of the film and could potentially pave the way for the future of de-aging technology in film.
It does feel a bit off-putting to see the younger, digitally aged Smith, so we’ll just need to suspend our disbelief and roll with it to get the most enjoyment out of this film.
Gemini Man arrives in cinemas on 4 October 2019.
