Steven Spielberg is adapting the new film version of the iconic musical West Side Story, and the first teaser trailer is here!
West Side Story is a musical drama film based on the 1957 Broadway show of the same name, inspired by William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.
It follows the rivalry between two ethnic street gangs in 1950s New York, with a forbidden love at its centre.
The stage show has been revived on Broadway multiple times in the six-plus decades it’s been around and was adapted into a feature film in 1961 that went on to win ten Oscars.
It seems only fitting that a director like Steven Spielberg would take on the modern adaptation of the film, and his style is all over the first teaser trailer below.
The teaser offers a glimpse of the romance at the core of the film, along with the rival gangs and sprawling dance numbers, which look fantastic.
The screenplay is written by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Tony Kushner, bringing together the best creative minds out of Broadway and Hollywood.
West Side Story features excellent production values with particular attention to detail paid to the costuming and set design.
Naturally, audiences can expect some of the best song and dance numbers to feature in a musical film as well.
The Walt Disney Company will release West Side Story in Australian cinemas on 9 December 2021.
