‘The Grudge’ Supernatural Horror Film Gets Remade Again

Supernatural Horror Film

The supernatural horror film The Grudge gets a new remake, this time promising audiences more up-to-date terror.

The 2002 Japanese horror film Ju-on went on to become a bit of a cult classic in the supernatural horror film sub-genre, even getting its own 2004 English-language remake by original director Takashi Shimizu starring Sarah Michelle Gellar.

The 2004 remake couldn’t quite capture the same levels of eeriness that Shimizu’s original offered, though it still managed to spawn a couple of English-language sequels.

Come 2020, and director Nicolas Pesce and the producers behind films like Don’t Breathe (2016) and Evil Dead (2013) have decided to give it another go, this time with the aim to add that modern-day signature-style terror we’ve become accustomed to.

Don’t Breathe was an outstanding little film and Evil Dead really took that franchise to the next level in terms of its horror and gore.

Judging by the first trailer for The Grudge, we can expect to see terrifying, nightmare-inducing visuals on our screens in the near future.

The film tells the story of a house that’s cursed by a vengeful ghost, bringing about the violent death of anyone who dares enter it.

In this case, realtor Peter Spencer (John Cho) and Detective Muldoon (Andrea Riseborough) are at the centre of this evil spirit’s aim.

I find supernatural horrors the toughest nut to crack in modern horror and there’s still no telling that The Grudge will have what it takes to stand out from the pack.

There’s a good crew behind it, which is promising, though we’ll have to wait until 30 January 2020 at the earliest to see how far they have pushed the boundaries, if at all.

The film co-stars Demián Bichir, Betty Gilpin, Lin Shaye and Jacki Weaver.
