Tom Hanks writes and stars in the upcoming submarine war film Greyhound, which sends him back into WWII some twenty-plus years after Saving Private Ryan.
Hanks plays a US Navy captain who is tasked with leading an Allied convoy to the frontlines while being stalked by enemy U-boats.
Greyhound looks like a fairly typical submarine war film, however, Tom Hanks’ addition makes it all the more credible.
The trailer highlights plenty of the action that audiences can expect, and it all looks polished and intense, which should make for some edge-of-your-seat viewing.
Greyhound is based on the 1955 novel The Good Shepherd by author C.S. Forester and is directed by Aaron Schneider, who has one other directing credit in 2009’s Get Low.
This will be Hanks’ first appearance in a WWII film since his role in the Steven Spielberg classic Saving Private Ryan in 1998, a film that won 5 Oscars and is widely regarded as one of the best war films of all time.
That’s a hard act to follow, and it doesn’t look like Greyhound will have enough in it to compete with Saving Private Ryan, though it should still make for some entertaining viewing.
The film co-stars Elisabeth Shue and Stephen Graham and is due out on 12 June 2020.
