Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror masterpiece The Shining sequel is arriving soon – check out the final trailer for Doctor Sleep starring Ewan McGregor.
Ewan McGregor stars as Danny Torrance (the young boy from The Shining), now a tormented adult, who makes his way back to the Overlook Hotel after meeting a girl who also has the ‘shining’ power.
The pair are trying to escape the clutches of an evil group of immortal beings known as ‘The True Knot’, led by Rebecca Ferguson’s ‘Rose the Hat’.
‘The True Knot’ living off the power that people with the ‘shining’ possess by taking it for themselves.
None of the above was explored in Kubrick’s seminal horror film, it rather being ambiguous to a fault, opening up a multitude of fan theories, discussions and analysis’ of the film in the decades since.
Doctor Sleep expands on The Shining lore by introducing ‘The True Knot’ as well as re-visiting some of the ghosts featured in the original first part of this story.
It’s based on the Stephen King novel of the same name which was released in 2013, so anyone that’s read the book will have a heads up on what may happen in the film adaptation.
For those like me that haven’t read either King book, however, it will be exciting to learn more about the mythology of the ‘shining’ and some of the ghosts featured in the work.
The Shining sequel is directed by Mike Flanagan, who’s done some great work in the horror genre with films like Hush (2016), Gerald’s Game (2017) and the awesome Netflix TV series, The Haunting of Hill House.
Co-starring alongside McGregor and Ferguson are Cliff Curtis, Bruce Greenwood, Jacob Tremblay and Kyliegh Curran.
Doctor Sleep looks like it has plenty going for it on the horror front, though try as it might, I don’t think it will come close to Kubrick’s adaptation of the first King novel in this series (which King famously hated).
Check it out in theatres from 8 November 2019.
