Trailer for Psychological Period Horror Film ‘The Little Stranger’

period horror movies

Domhnall Gleeson leads Lenny Abrahamson’s follow-up to Frank (2014) and Room (2015), with the psychological period horror film The Little Stranger.

Respected country doctor, Dr Faraday (Domhnall Gleeson), takes on a patient at Hundreds Hall, a house where his mother once worked as a maid.

There he finds that the home’s inhabitants, the Ayres family, are being haunted.

The film reminds me a lot of the recent release Winchester (2018)but only in costume design and the time period it’s set in.

While the two films overlap in those similarities, it’s plain to see that Lenny Abrahamson’s The Little Stranger will be a horror that will cut to the bone, as opposed to the Spierig Brothers’ Winchester, which was mostly just formulaic jump-scare-material horror.

Abrahamson’s past two films Frank and Room, both featured exceptional stories and characters, in a style grounded in reality.

Judging by the trailer for his latest, it looks like those same attributes have carried across, meaning we should be in for a terrifying film.

Starring alongside Gleeson is Ruth Wilson, Charlotte Rampling and rising star Will Poulter.

The film is based on the 2009 novel of the same name by Sarah Waters, who recently also had another of her works, ‘Fingersmith’, adapted into the film The Handmaiden (2016) by acclaimed director Chan-wook Park.

The Little Stranger releases on 31 August 2018, check out the first trailer below.
