Octavia Spencer stars as a creepy (and seemingly violent) mother-figure in the upcoming Blumhouse horror/thriller, Ma.
A lonely woman befriends a group of teenagers by welcoming them into her home where they can throw a party in her basement.
It seems, however, Sue Ann aka ‘Ma’ (Spencer) appears to develop some ill intentions towards her newfound friends.
Ma looks like a fun psychological horror/thriller from Tate Taylor, the director of The Help (2011) and The Girl on the Train (2016), and powerhouse horror production company Blumhouse.
Octavia Spencer looks like she’s having a ball in this one as well, leading a horror movie for the first time.
She recently appeared in films such as Instant Family (2018), The Shape of Water (2017) and Hidden Figures (2016), so it’s nice to see her mix it up in a role like this.
The film will likely have its fair share of violence, though judging by the trailer, it doesn’t feel like it will take itself seriously, which is always a bonus.
Further boosting this film’s rep is its production company Blumhouse, who have become synonymous with the horror genre in the past few years.
Ma co-stars Missi Pyle, Luke Evans, Juliette Lewis and Allison Janney and is due for release on 31 May 2019.
