Lily James and Armie Hammer Front New Adaptation of ‘Rebecca’

Armie Hammer and Lily James feature in the trailer for the new adaptation of the gothic mystery romance story, Rebecca, for Netflix.

Following a whirlwind romance and marriage, a young newlywed (Lily James) is taken to her husband’s (Armie Hammer) wealthy family estate where she’s confronted by their sinister housekeeper (Kristin Scott Thomas), and finds herself living in the shadow of her husband’s widow, the elegant Rebecca, whose memory lives on in the house.

Based on the 1938 Daphne du Maurier novel of the same name, Rebecca was also adapted by Alfred Hitchcock in 1940 and went on to win two Oscars (Best Picture and Best Cinematography).

Director Ben Wheatley, who directed Free Fire (2016), High-Rise (2015) and Kill List (2011) is at the helm here, and while it doesn’t look like it’ll be winning any awards, the film is certainly intriguing.

The gothic, mystery-romance tone appears to have been captured superbly by the director, and Armie Hammer and Lily James make for appealing leads, but it’s Kristin Scott Thomas that steals the show in the trailer with her portrayal of the estate’s frightening housekeeper.

The trailer also doesn’t give too much away about the specifics of the plot, though it’s suggested there is a supernatural element, but one that could also be psychological, which always adds a thought-provoking layer to the story.

It’s due to arrive on Netflix on 21 October 2020.
