Paramount Pictures has released 5 mini-teaser clips for the upcoming live action adaptation of 1995’s seminal Japanese anime film, Ghost in the Shell.
The 1995 manga film is one of the most well known manga films to ever come out of Japan.
For anyone that hasn’t seen it, I highly recommend you chase it down and check it out, the synopsis is as follows:
Ghost in the Shell follows the hunt by the public-security agency Section 9 for a mysterious hacker known as the Puppet Master. With the assistance of her team, Motoko Kusanagi tracks and finds their suspect, only to be drawn into a complex sequence of political intrigue and a cover-up as to the identity and goals of the Puppet Master.
This new live adaptation was caught up in a bit of whitewashing controversy recently, because of the lead role going to Scarlett Johansson.
It’s not the first time that’s happened in film and it’s not the last, so as filmgoers I think it’s time we just accept it and move on, or don’t watch the movie, simple.
The 5 teasers below give us a very brief look at the film, whose neo-techno style appears to have been influenced somewhat by the Wachowski’s Cloud Atlas, which I was a big fan of.
The film is directed by Rupert Sanders, whose only other directing credit comes from 2012’s Snow White and the Huntsman, which was pretty average, so I hope he can do this franchise justice.
At the very least the filmmakers appear to have nailed the visual style of the film, judging by the new clips.
Scarlett Johansson stars in the lead role and is joined by Michael Pitt, Juliette Binoche and veteran Japanese actor Takeshi Kitano.
Ghost in the Shell is due for release on 30 March 2017 in Australia.
