It’s an All-Female Secret Agent Team-Up in New Action-Thriller ‘The 355’

Jessica Chastain leads an all-star female secret agent cast in the new action-thriller The 355 from director Simon Kinberg.

Chastain plays an American CIA agent who must team up and form a group with fellow international agents and help recover a dangerous new weapon that has fallen into the wrong hands.

The team, which includes representatives from Britain (Lupita Nyong’o), Germany (Diane Kruger), China (Bingbing Fan), and Colombia (Penélope Cruz), don’t seem to get along at first, but quickly put their differences aside when the stakes are raised.

What follows is an all-out action assault on the bad guys from a team of the world’s best female secret agent group.

The 355 comes to us from the producers of 2016s Jason Bourne, and it shows, with its quick-cutting, gritty action scenes glimpsed at in the trailer.

While that style of action is cool and can make for some stimulating viewing, the film generally looks like any other run-of-the-mill spy film with the addition of the all-female cast trope.

There is always a market for spy action films like this and its casting direction does have the potential to bring in a larger audience, so that’s fine, but the big red flag here is the film’s director.

Simon Kinberg made his directorial debut on X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019) which ended up being the worst in the X-Men film franchise, and one of the worst of the year.

That fact doesn’t instill much confidence in me, though this could perhaps be seen as a chance at redemption for the director.

Despite the concerns mentioned, The 355 does look like it at least features cool action set-pieces, which should make for some good entertainment value.

See it in cinemas from 15 January 2021.
