‘Ghostbusters’ – Review

ghostbusters

Before we get started let’s just address the elephant in the room…I love the fact that these women were cast as the Ghostbusters!

When ghosts start appearing all over New York City, paranormal enthusiasts Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig), Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy), Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon) and subway worker Patty Tolan (Leslie Jones) band together to take down the undead beings haunting Manhattan.

Back in 1984, a pure comedy classic was put out in theatres for generations to enjoy and after a sequel and years of endeavouring to reboot the franchise, we finally got it! The decision of using an all-female cast for this reboot turned many heads, but in my opinion it was a great idea and it worked! All four comedians have great chemistry together and really make you believe they are the characters they are portraying. Their individual personalities weave together really well and move the story along quite smoothly.

Though this may be the case, this movie is not a great one. The story is good enough but the laughs fall flat…a lot! There are constant jokes and witty humour throughout the movie that make you chuckle, but that’s about it. Every time a joke is set up to be a huge gut-buster (pun intended) it fizzles out, which was confirmed by the silence of the audience in the theatre.

The story starts off great, with scares and laughs and then moves perfectly in the right direction until the 45 minute mark, where it starts to decline and becomes a little upsetting. This is a good movie though. The cameos were great and the supporting cast delivered well too. Being a Ghostbusters fan, I wasn’t upset by this reboot and feel it is a worthy successor to a truly superior original. With chuckles and a team that does the legacy of the Ghostbusters proud; you can expect great things from a sequel!

Fun Fact:

A third Ghostbusters film had been stalled in development for nearly 25 years, until director Paul Feig pitched a reboot instead.
