Charlie Hunnam and Rami Malek star in the classic prison-break genre film Papillon, a remake of the 1973 film of the same name, based on true events.
Henri ‘Papillon’ Charrière (Charlie Hunnam) is a French safe-cracker who gets sent to jail for life after being framed for murder.
On the infamous penal colony on Devil’s Island, Papillon befriends Louis Dega (Rami Malek), who agrees to finance Papillon’s escape attempt in exchange for protection.
Directed by Michael Noer, Papillon appears to have all the makings of a classic genre piece based on the first trailer.
The film looks to have all of the elements required to make for some gripping viewing, including excellent performances and production design.
Set in the 30’s, and a remake of the 73′ film that starred Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman, Papillon could serve as a throwback to filmmaking of that era, which produced plenty of classic films.
Hunnam was last seen in Guy Ritchie’s stylish adaptation of the King Arthur tale, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017), and Malek is set to play the iconic Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in the upcoming biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody (2018).
While these two may not have the star power that Steve McQueen or Dustin Hoffman had at their peak (not yet anyway), they’re both highly capable actors and make for an exciting headlining duo.
Papillon is due to hit cinemas on 24 August 2018, check out the first trailer below.
