Director Tate Taylor rounds up an excellent ensemble cast for the new comedy crime caper film, Breaking News in Yuba County.
Allison Janney plays Sue Buttons, a housewife who becomes somewhat of a local celebrity after her husband, Karl (Matthew Modine), goes missing.
Sue does everything she can to prolong the media exposure and enjoy her time in the limelight, as the truth of the story slowly unfolds.
She’ll run into a colorful cast of characters that will upend her way of life, and cause some hilarity along the way.
There’s a big Coen brothers, Fargo (1996) vibe to Breaking News in Yuba County as it features an oddball crime story filled with lots of humor and a quirky cast of characters, as well as plenty of twists.
There have been many attempts by lesser filmmakers to replicate the style of the Coen brothers, and not many have succeeded, though it looks like Taylor, whose past works include The Help (2011), The Girl on the Train (2016), and Ma (2019), may have the story to do it right.
Helping the director’s chances is the awesome cast attached to this film, that alongside Janney and Modine include Juliette Lewis, Ellen Barkin, Awkwafina, Regina Hall, Clifton Collins Jr, Samira Wiley, and Jimmi Simpson.
Breaking News in Yuba County releases in select theatres in the US from 12 February 2021, with a digital release scheduled for the same day.
