Trailer for New Black Comedy Film – ‘Thoroughbreds’

black comedy films

Black comedies are a rare and successful beast when it comes to that particular sub-genre; they tend to divide audiences more than any other certain style.

One main question would be is why they do appeal to audiences?

Do they show a funny side to the bad things we do which makes us feel less guilty for doing them?

Perhaps.

It is good to see that they are still being made, more so in the independent film circuit which brings us to the latest offering, Thoroughbreds.

Starring Olivia Cooke, Anya Taylor-Joy and the late Anton Yelchin, the new trailer brings the dark and funny together seamlessly.

As with most black comedies, someone is on a hit-list that most likely deserves to be, and we have our antagonists whom aren’t exactly first class citizens, but we root for them anyway.

Hopefully this pushes the boundaries of bad taste in an entertaining way as Cooke’s and Taylor-Joy’s characters hire Yelchin to ‘off’ their mean employer.

It could go either way, but with such talent involved, it’s something to keep an eye on when it opens in March 2018.

In the meantime, here are some black comedies from year’s passed I can recommend:

Very Bad Things (1998)

As black a comedy as it gets; a group of men celebrating a bachelor party accidently kill the stripper, thus setting off a chain of hilariously vile events.

Heathers (1988)

This one barely needs an introduction and has rarely been matched.

Death Becomes Her (1992)

A high profile cast that includes Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn and Bruce Willis lead this macabre tale of staying young at literally any cost, which mainly involves murder and body dismemberment.

Cheap Thrills (2013)

A more recent addition which has a small following, but hopefully grows over the years.

It’s basically truth or dare – with no rules.

Definitely worth a look if you like your comedies blacker than black.

Inglorious Basterds (2009)

This one may have you asking why this is on the list, but upon repeat viewings it is actually quite hilarious whilst keeping with its violent nature (helped in most part by Christoph Waltz as Col. Hans Landa).
