Michael B. Jordan returns as Adonis Creed, son of the famous fictional boxer Apollo Creed in Creed II, the sequel to the hit 2015 film.
Adonis takes on the fight of his life against the formidable opponent Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu) – son of Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) – the man who killed his father in the boxing ring.
Ivan Drago and Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) both appeared in 1985’s Rocky IV, in which Rocky Balboa (Stallone) faced Ivan Drago in a boxing bout to avenge his best friend Apollo’s death.
Creed II appears to follow a very similar plot to that film, albeit one with a tone that feels a lot more grounded (Rocky IV was fairly cheeseball).
It’s the same grounded tone set forward in Ryan Coogler’s first Creed film, which went on to become a huge success, putting Michael B. Jordan on the map.
Lesser known director Steven Caple Jr. is at the helm for this one, and it also stars Tessa Thompson, Wood Harris, Russell Hornsby, Florian “Big Nasty” Munteanu, Andre Ward, Phylicia Rashad and Dolph Lundgren.
It’s hard to get excited about a film with a plot that’s been done before (which feels like 90% of movies these days), however, the film’s second trailer is rather inspirational and motivating.
As far as boxing-centred movies go, those are the two things viewers can really only ask for.
In that regard, Creed II could be a hit.
The film releases on 29 November 2018.
