Disney Acquires 21st Century Fox for a Bazillion Dollars

21st century fox

Disney tightens its vice grip on the entertainment industry by acquiring a large portion of 21st Century Fox for a whopping $52 billion USD.

Disney has paid of a huge chunk of Rupert Murdoch’s company’s debt while acquiring most of its assets.

The deal had been rumoured to go ahead for some time now and was finally announced today.

Collider has a handy breakdown of which assets Disney will own as well as which will remain with Fox via a subsidiary company.

So what does this mean for movie fans, and especially superhero movie fans?

Well, something fans have been clamouring for for years now – Fox owned Marvel characters teaming up with Disney owned Marvel characters of course!

Fans have long wanted to see characters from the X-Men, Fantastic Four and the likes of Deadpool feature alongside their favourite heroes from Marvel’s Avengers.

While the deal will likely take at least 18 months to process, it seems as though fans will finally get their wish moving forward afterwards.

So for anyone that thought (or hoped) that the superhero movie onslaught over the last 10 years would slow down, think again, because it’s only starting to pick up steam.

Whether or not this move by Disney is good for the industry on the whole also remains to be seen, as the way things are going, it seems like Disney will end up owning everything in the entertainment industry in another 10 years or so.

There will always be a place for independent studios in the industry and of course Disney will have larger studio competition (Sony, Universal?), but for how long?

And do we really want to see all of our major blockbuster films Disney-fied?

We’ll just have to wait and see I guess.

As long as the quality of films to come out of the studio are good, then does it even matter?
