Alex Garland, the writer/director of the super-cool 2014 sci-fi film Ex Machina returns with his latest project Annihilation, starring Natalie Portman.
Ex Machina was a standout sci-fi film for 2015 (and even possibly the last decade) about artificial intelligence, and Annihilation looks like it has the potential to be another standout for the director.
The film follows Portman’s character ‘The Biologist’ (as per IMDB) as she goes on an expedition to some strange land to find her missing husband.
The trailer doesn’t reveal whether the strange land is on Earth or off it, but it’s an alien-type landscape that closely resembles Earth, however the laws of nature do not apply there.
Much like Machina, this film looks like it will go down the sci-fi thriller path, and also like Alex Garland’s first film, it looks like it will feature some gorgeous cinematography.
The most peculiar thing from the trailer for me was that the film looks like some kind of hybrid cross between Arrival (2016), Alien: Covenant (2017), Kong: Skull Island (2017), and Avatar (2009).
Unless I’m the only one that can see it, it looks like Annihilation features some type of element from all of those films, which is not a bad thing.
Combine all of the above with a great cast that includes Portman in the lead, along with Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, Benedict Wong and Oscar Isaac, and this could potentially be one of the better films of 2018.
It releases officially on 23 February 2018.
