A first look image of actor Martin Freeman in the upcoming Australian post- apocalyptic thriller film Cargo has been released.
The new image features Freeman front and centre, in a blood-stained shirt, carrying an infant on his back.
It makes more sense when you read the synopsis below:
Stranded in rural Australia in the aftermath of a violent pandemic, an infected man desperately seeks a new guardian for his infant child, and a means to protect her from his own changing nature. Salvation may lie with an isolated Aboriginal tribe, but to gain access he must first earn the allegiance of a young Indigenous girl on a tragic quest of her own.
I think post-apocalyptic zombie/outbreak films hit a saturation point a long time ago, but there is obviously still a market for them.
We can only hope that Cargo will bring a unique outlook to the genre, which is incredibly difficult in my opinion, considering it feels like everything’s been done already.
Cargo is based upon a short film that was a finalist in the popular Australian short film festival Tropfest in 2013.
Since then the short film has become the most watched film on Tropfest’s YouTube channel, attracting more than 10 million views, which is an amazing effort, and probably even better than winning the competition, as what better prize is there than having your short film realised as a feature?
Freeman is joined by David Gulpilil (Charlie’s Country, Ten Canoes, Storm Boy), Anthony Hayes (Animal Kingdom, The Light Between Oceans, upcoming War Machine), Caren Pistorius (Slow West, Offspring, The Light Between Oceans), Susie Porter (Puberty Blues, Better Than Sex, Little Fish) and newcomer Simone Landers.
Cargo was written by Yolanda Ramke, who is co-directing with Ben Howling and it is due to hit Australian cinemas some time in 2017.
