Check out a gallery of images from the upcoming Luc Besson science-fiction film, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.
Valerian is Besson’s first foray into science-fiction since directing the fantastic film The Fifth Element, which starred Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovich back in 1997.
He did also direct Lucy with Scarlett Johansson recently, which certainly had sci-fi elements to it, however judging by the production design of Valerian, it seems like it could easily be the spiritual follow-up to The Fifth Element.
That’s exciting stuff as Besson is a very solid director, with a career spanning over 30 years in the industry, writing, directing and producing movies.
Not too much has been revealed about the film, however as per Wikipedia, the film is based on the French science fiction comics series Valérian and Laureline, written by Pierre Christin and illustrated by Jean-Claude Mézières. It stars Dane DeHaan as Valérian and Cara Delevingne as Laureline.
The film also has an impressive supporting cast, which includes Ethan Hawke, Clive Owen, John Goodman, Rihanna and Rutger Hauer.
It’s due for release in July 2017 and if the film ends up being as good as its production design, then we should be in for a treat.

In the 28th century, Valérian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. Valérian has more in mind than a professional relationship with his partner – blatantly chasing after her with propositions of romance. But his extensive history with women, and her traditional values, drive Laureline to continuously rebuff him.
Under directive from their Commander Arün Filitt (Clive Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis inhabited by thousands of species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time – uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.
