Adam Sandler returns to his most famous persona – playing a doofus – in the new comedy-horror film Hubie Halloween for Netflix.
Sandler plays Hubie Dubois, the town of Salem’s resident doofus, whom despite his status, comes to the town’s aid when some suspicious, supernatural activities begin to occur on Halloween night.
Filled with an outstanding comedy cast of Sandler’s contemporaries, Hubie Halloween sees the famous actor revisit the town-fool schtick, which he popularized in films like The Waterboy (1998) and Little Nicky (2000).
The film’s humour is reminiscent of the type found in the above-mentioned films, so fans of those will find a lot of value in this one.
While Sandler’s comedy work has been touch-and-go over the years, he does break out the occasional comedy gem.
Okay, “gem” is a stretch, however, his two recent Netflix comedies, The Do-Over (2016) and Murder Mystery (2019) were quite entertaining.
He’s also delivered some respected dramedies recently, with the likes of The Week Of (2018) and The Meyerowitz Stories (2017), along with a dramatic turn in the outstanding Uncut Gems (2019), which makes a strong case for best picture of 2019.
Whether you love or hate Sandler, or find him somewhere in-between, you can’t deny the actor his staying power.
Hubie Halloween hits Netflix on 7 October 2020, right in time for Halloween.
