Bringing all kinds of excitement, EW has released a still from the upcoming sequel Mary Poppins Returns, starring Emily Blunt.

Blunt can be seen dancing in the streets in this new instalment, whipping up the nostalgia and flair that would make Julie Andrews smile.

Mary re-visits Jane and Michael Banks (Emily Mortimer and Ben Whishaw), now adults in 1930’s London.

Due to the tragic death of Michael’s wife, Mary is prompted to return, ultimately helping Jane, Michael and his three children with their struggles in relation to their loss.

She brings reinforcements in the form of street lamplighter Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda) and her eccentric cousin Topsy (Meryl Streep).

The rest of the cast is also the stuff of dreams with Dick Van Dyke, Julie Walters, Angela Lansbury, Colin Firth and David Warner.

The film is written by David McGee (2012’s Life Of Pi) and is directed by Rob Marshall (2002’s Chicago).

According to Screenrant, it is important to note that Marshall did not want to just recreate an up-to-date version of the original.

He explained that he never had any intention or interest in trying to “re-do the original,” and was adamant that the sequel only be made if they could find “a very important reason for Mary to come back.”

Considering the financial strain of the 1930’s, the loss of a wife and a mother – Mary returns to help Michael, Jane and the children believe in happiness and magic once again.

Although Blunt had previously expressed being ‘terrified’ to be playing the role, she seems to be embracing it beautifully if the stills are anything to go by.

Set to be released on 25 December 2018 (1 January 2019 in Oz), we can expect many a show-stopping number with an army of chimney sweepers in foggy, 1930’s London.
