It’s the Americans up against the Russians in the new submarine action-thriller film Hunter Killer, starring Gerard Butler.
A Russian General goes rogue, causing a deadly rift between the US and Russia.
A submarine captain (Butler) teams up with US Navy Seals to rescue the Russian president (who has been kidnapped by said General) and ease tensions between the rival nations.
Along the way, of course, are plenty of battles and death.
The film’s plot and overall style is a definite throwback to cheesy action films of the past.
Much like Butler’s other starring vehicle, Olympus Has Fallen (2013) and its sequel, Hunter Killer looks to follow suit in its over-the-top, high-stakes excuse for violence on the screen.
The film looks cheap and nasty, yet there is still an obvious market for it.
Films like this one are a good form of escapism, allowing viewers to turn off their brains for a couple of hours.
And Butler is the king of these movies at the moment.
The film also stars Common, Linda Cardellini, Michael Nyqvist (in one of his final feature films) and Gary Oldman.
What Oldman is doing in a film like this, coming off his Oscar-winning performance as Winston Churchill in last year’s Darkest Hour, is anyone’s guess.
Though it wouldn’t be the first, and I’m sure, the last time great actors will appear in B-to-C grade films like this one.
Donovan Marsh directs, and the film is due for release on 26 October 2018.
