Jason Statham plays an expert deep sea diver who’s sent out to save the crew of an underwater vessel, which has been attacked by the recently discovered, prehistoric 75-foot long shark known as the Megalodon.
If you thought the shark in Jaws (1975) was terrifying, then wait until you meet The Meg.
The film is directed by John Turteltaub, director of the National Treasure (2004-2007) series, and the all-time comedy classic Cool Runnings (1993).
The Meg is an action-adventure film that fits perfectly in the modern era of monster-movie reboots; see Jurassic World (2015) and its upcoming sequel Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (June 2018), as well as Kong: Skull Island (2017) and Dwayne Johnson’s Rampage (out this week).
Aside from the D-grade Sharknado (2013-) series of films, it feels like it’s been a while since a giant shark has been the primary villain of a monster movie, so it seems fitting that the vicious ocean dweller gets its due here.
Judging by the first trailer below, The Meg looks like it will have some humorous elements to go along with all the action, which is a welcome choice.
Films like these shouldn’t take themselves too seriously, as they tend to fall flat when they do.
Thankfully The Meg should be an entertaining popcorn film at best, one that won’t necessarily need to be judged on any other merit other than the entertainment factor.
Statham has been quiet the last couple of years, only appearing in Mechanic: Resurrection (2016) and the action blockbuster The Fate of the Furious (2017), so it’s good to see him back.
The film also stars Ruby Rose, Cliff Curtis, Bingbing Li and Rainn Wilson, and is due out in cinemas on 30 August 2018.
