Viola Davis to Star in New Steve McQueen Film

Excellent news out of Hollywood today with Viola Davis set to star in the upcoming film Widows, by the renowned director Steve McQueen.

Along with the great actress/director pairing, the Widows screenplay is written by McQueen and Gone Girl author/screenwriter Gillian Flynn (who also wrote the screenplay for the film adaptation of Gone Girl).

The film will be based on a British miniseries of the same name, revolving around four armed robbers who are killed in a failed heist attempt, only to have their widows step up to finish the job.

The Suicide Squad, The Help and Law & Order actress has been quite prolific on-screen recently, so this should gig should only further her star-power and place in the industry by teaming with Steve McQueen, who is one of the best working directors today.

With only a short number of films to his name that include Hunger, Shame and 12 Years a Slave, the Oscar-winning director has left a very impressive mark on the industry, so his next project will of course be highly anticipated.

While his films might not be the easiest to watch for some people, you can’t argue that they’re not all brilliant.

The plot of Widows sounds like it has the markings of a typical mainstream film, however it’s fair to say that in McQueen’s hands, it will likely be far from it.

Widows is currently in pre-production with no release date set and Viola Davis is the only actor to be cast in the film at present.

We’ll post more details on the film as they emerge.
