Trailer for Aronofsky’s ‘Mother!’ Is a Serious Throwback to Horror Classics

The official trailer for Darren Aronofsky’s psychological horror Mother! dropped recently, and it’s giving us some serious Rosemary’s Baby (1968) vibes.

We don’t know a whole lot about the plot of Mother! thus far, but the trailer certainly gives us a tantalising taste of what to expect.

A young woman (Jennifer Lawrence) and her husband (Javier Bardem) appear to be enjoying their life together in their peaceful country home, but things start to get weird after the arrival of a couple (Michelle Pfieffer and Ed Harris), who subsequently stay with them.

With the help of Jóhann Jóhannsson’s jarring score, the trailer hints at the possibility that Jennifer Lawrence’s character is in life-threatening danger, and that her husband and the mysterious couple are far less benevolent than they seem.

Whether there’s satanic forces at work, whether there’s a violent cult intent on brainwashing and harming people, or whether there’s a combination of both at play, one thing is quite clear – Mother! is classic Aronofsky, imbued with the director’s ability to meld horror with intelligence.

Mother! is released in Australia on 14 September 2017.

Have a watch of the trailer below – what kind of danger do you think J-Law’s character is up against?
