It’s safe to say that a lot of emerging filmmakers like to pay homage to the movies they grew up with and drew inspiration from – Summer of ’84 is no exception.
Judging by the trailer it looks as though directors Francois Simard, Anouk Whissell and Yoann-Karl Whissell (count ‘em three) binged enough 80’s horror to re-create the finest of details for the film.
That includes the soundtrack, costume design and even the cheesy acting.
Yes, there are also clear references and a possible cash-in on the hugely popular Netflix series Stranger Things as we follow a group of adolescent boys who believe there is a serial killer on the loose, and begin taking matters into their own hands.
Throw in the ‘hot, out-of-their-league love interest’ and ‘everybody in the cast is a suspect’ scenario and you have a modern-day slasher movie that steps right out of the 80’s.
Summer of ’84 may not look like it’s breaking any new ground, but with the catchy tagline, ‘Every serial killer lives next to someone’, what it does look like is a popcorn-munching good time that could satisfy any 80’s child and new horror audiences alike.
The film hits select US theatres from 10 August 2018.
