Disney’s Star Wars: Episode 9 has found itself a new director in The Force Awakens (2015) helmer and all-round director-extraordinaire, J.J. Abrams.

Fans were left wondering who would direct the upcoming 9th episode of the beloved Star Wars franchise, after word recently broke that original director Colin Trevorrow had left the project.

There hasn’t been much detail on the basis behind the Jurassic World (2015) director’s leaving the project, other than it was a mutual departure between he and Lucasfilm.

While it may have come as a bit of a shock to those that were looking forward to Trevorrow directing the film, it’s now been confirmed that J.J. Abrams will be taking over.

Abrams did a great job with The Force Awakens, and obviously knows the material inside out, so this news comes as the best case scenario for the film.

With the announcement comes some slightly sombre news, in that Episode 9 has now been delayed by a whopping 7 months, with its new release date scheduled for 20 December 2019.

The new release date will come almost exactly 2 years after this year’s The Last Jedi hits cinemas, which may be too long for some super-fans to bear, though a 2 year gap between films in a trilogy is a fairly common occurrence.

In any case, even with the extended wait time on the film, fans can rest assured that it’s now in good hands.

What do you think of J.J. Abrams returning to the director’s chair of a Star Wars project?

Let us know in the comments below, and have another look at the teaser trailer for The Last Jedi here, while we eagerly anticipate its release in December of this year.
