Bill Murray and Rashida Jones star in Sofia Coppola’s latest about a father and daughter rekindling their relationship in On the Rocks.
Jones plays Laura, a young mother who re-connects with her eccentric playboy father, Felix (Murray), as the pair embark on an adventure to follow Laura’s husband Dean (Marlon Wayans) around town and find out if he’s being unfaithful.
The journey brings the father and daughter closer together as they learn and grow as people.
On the Rocks sees Bill Murray reunite with Sofia Coppola after having previously worked together on the cult classic film, Lost in Translation (2003), and this film features a similar, subdued comedic tone.
Coppola hasn’t strayed too far from her regular style with this one, so fans of the director’s work will feel right at home here.
The film looks witty and charming, with a sincere look into its characters’ lives.
Coppola’s last film, The Beguiled (2017), was an excellent period thriller film and remake of the 1971 film of the same name, but was one that didn’t receive much buzz.
The director is hoping Murray’s attachment to this will get more eyes on the film, and it should work.
On the Rocks is due for release in October 2020.
