New ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ Footage Teases Us with Dark Characters

dark characters in movies

Some new footage from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has dropped, teasing some returning and potential new dark characters in the film.

Disney showcased this clip at their recent D23 expo to heavy fanfare and it was just recently released online for everyone.

The clip first builds up by highlighting segments from the first 8 Star Wars movies, with a voice-over from Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker imparting wisdom onto Daisy Ridley’s Rey, in a buildup to the release of the new footage from the highly anticipated 9th film.

It’s a great nostalgia trip for fans before we’re treated to the good stuff from the video.

We get some gorgeous visuals from the film before the real treat comes, in the allusion to the dark characters pulling the strings behind the scenes in the form of Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) and the iconic breathing of Darth Vader!

Not only that, but we also see a (presumably) evil version of C3PO (Anthony Daniels) with glowing red eyes, and, a version of Rey that appears to be under the influence of the Dark Side, wielding a cool double-ended red light sabre!

We knew Palpatine would be making a return appearance from his presence in the first teaser trailer, though there was no sign of a return from Darth Vader in that one.

It makes sense for director J.J. Abrams and the team behind this new trilogy of Star Wars films to bring back the most popular film villain of all time, so it’s only somewhat of a surprise to see a mention of Vader.

The footage opens up a lot of questions and if you have any theories, drop us a line in the comments!

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is the final film in the Skywalker Saga and is due to hit cinemas on 20 December 2019, check out the awesome new footage below!
