The Sega gaming company’s most iconic character, Sonic the Hedgehog, features in the trailer for his first ever live-action movie.
The super-fast Sonic the Hedgehog (Ben Schwartz) is discovered by a rural cop (James Marsden) after running past his squad car at ludicrous speeds.
Sonic’s speedy abilities get him in trouble with the government after he causes a massive power-outage, forcing them to send the infamous Dr Robotnik (Jim Carrey) to capture him.
Cue the shenanigans.
Sonic first made his debut back in 1991 as a videogame character on the Sega Genesis gaming platform as a way to compete with Nintendo’s Mario of Mario Bros. fame.
The rest, as they say, is history, as Sonic went on to become just as iconic a gaming mascot as Mario, spawning countless games and appearances in other entertainment mediums.
This is, however, Sonic’s first live-action film and judging by the trailer, the film could be just watchable or a complete disaster.
It’s still too early to judge, of course, though it looks pretty messy.
One thing that could work in its favour though is Jim Carrey playing the film’s villain, as he looks to have fully embraced the role.
The other thing is that the filmmakers seem to know exactly what type of movie they’re going for here, which can only help the film.
See it in cinemas from 9 January 2020.
