Project Power sees a world where street drugs give their users unpredictable superpowers for 5 minutes at a time, but can also be deadly.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a local New Orleans cop who alongside an ex-solider (Jamie Foxx) and a teenage drug dealer (Dominique Fishback) is tasked to stop the spread of a mysterious new drug circulating the streets.
The new drug gives users superpowers like bulletproof skin, invisibility, and super strength for 5 minutes, with the catch being that the power is unique to each individual, and they won’t know what it is until they take it.
Its use an also be dangerous, as some users don’t survive the experience.
Project Power comes to us from Paranormal Activity 3 (2011), Nerve (2016), and Catfish (2010) directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, and it looks like a lot of fun.
The premise of a pill unlocking super-powers was used in the 2011 Bradley Cooper film Limitless with great success, but where the pill in that film unlocked 100% of the user’s brain, Joost and Schulman take the concept one step further here, giving users super-powered abilities akin to comic-book characters with each dose.
The super-powered abilities are used for the purposes of crime, which adds an extra layer to the film, and is the foundation for all the action and showing-off of impressive VFX.
Project Power is due to arrive on Netflix on 14 August 2020.
