‘IT’ – Pennywise Full Costume Tease

A new promo image for the upcoming Stephen King film adaptation of IT has been released, featuring a look at the new costume for Pennywise.

The costume was designed by Emmy-winning costume designer Janie Bryant, with the idea behind the costume being that it references the looks of historical periods, including Medieval, Renaissance, Elizabethan, and Victorian eras.

“The costume definitely incorporates all these otherworldly past lives, if you will… He is definitely a clown from a different time.” – Janie Bryant.

It’s definitely a creepy looking costume, but until we see a trailer, it’ll be hard to get excited for the film with just these images to go by.

The film was originally meant to be directed by Cary Fukunaga, who directed the first season of the impressive HBO series, True Detective.

A fair bit of interest was lost after Fukunaga dropped out of the film and a new round of skepticism emerged, as to whether or not IT will be a quality film.

The good news though is that the film has Chung-hoon Chung on board as its cinematographer, who is known for his work on the Park Chan-wook films such as Oldboy, Stoker and The Handmaiden amongst others.

So if one thing can at least be guaranteed, based on his work, is that the film will look beautifully haunting.

For anyone that may not be savvy to the plot of IT, the Wikipedia synopsis for Stephen King’s novel IT is as follows:

The story follows the exploits of seven children as they are terrorized by the eponymous being, which exploits the fears and phobias of its victims in order to disguise itself while hunting its prey. “It” primarily appears in the form of a clown in order to attract its preferred prey of young children. The novel is told through narratives alternating between two time periods, and is largely told in the third-person omniscient mode. It deals with themes that eventually became King staples: the power of memory, childhood trauma, and the ugliness lurking behind a façade of traditional small-town values.

The film is directed by Andrés Muschietti who directed the 2013 horror film Mama, and Bill Skarsgård plays the evil clown Pennywise.

It’s due for release in September of 2017.

Check out the teaser image of the new costume below, as well as a close-up of the character, also recently released by EW.
