The first teaser trailer for Disney-Pixar’s Onward has arrived, teasing the studio’s first film since 2017’s Coco to feature a brand new, original storyline.
Elf brothers Ian and Barley Lightfoot (Tom Holland and Chris Pratt) leave suburbia behind and embark on a journey to see if there’s still any magic left into the world.
We’re talking about the literal kind of magic here, as Onward is set in a fantasy suburban landscape, which features all types of mythical creatures living and roaming around town in place of regular humans.
The teaser reveals that once upon a time, magic was abundant in the fantasy world the film is set in, but since its modernisation, it seems to have disappeared.
It feels like a metaphor for the general world we live in, in that with every new bit of technology that comes out or any new social platform we adapt to, we lose a bit of the past and the way we used to do things, for better or worse.
The world the filmmakers have built for this one looks great and is in line with what Disney-Pixar is renowned for, so no surprises there, though a new film with an original storyline was unexpected but nice to see.
It does also feel like the film will have the same themes that most other Disney-Pixar films have, which is somewhat of a concern but at the end of the day, it’s those same re-hashed themes that keeps audiences coming back.
See the film in cinemas from 6 March 2020.
