The MCU’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a new superhero film filled with magical martial arts action and lore.
Simu Liu stars as Shang-Chi, a martial arts warrior destined to wield the immensely powerful and magical ten rings.
He’s forced to confront his uncle, Wenwu (Tony Leung), in a battle for control over the rings while coming of age and realising his true purpose in life.
The film marks Marvel’s first foray into martial arts movie territory along with diving into Asian culture.
While the themes and overall tone of the film fall in line with the rest of Marvel’s offerings, the entirely new cast of characters is a breath of fresh air for fans.
Alongside the upcoming Eternals, this film sees a welcome shift from Marvel to diversifying its characters and actors and is an exciting step in the right direction for the studio’s next ten years.
Likewise, it’s nice to see a martial arts movie blockbuster as they don’t come around often these days, and this one appears to have it all.
From the trailer below, you can see plenty of history pulled out of Asian culture, alongside the classic superhero action spectacle that fans have come to love, which should spell success for director Destin Daniel Cretton and Disney/Marvel.
The supporting cast includes Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, Fala Chen, Meng’er Zhang, Florian Munteanu and Ronny Chieng.
See Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in cinemas from 2 September 2021.
