In the least surprising news of the past week, Illumination Entertainment’s films Sing and Minions will be getting sequels, slated to premiere in 2020.
The studio has announced its updated release schedule, which now sees Minions 2 due for release on July 3, 2020; Sing 2 on Christmas day 2020, and the Secret Life of Pets 2 on July 3, 2019, which has been delayed about a year.
Illumination scored big in 2016 as the ‘other’ big player in the animated film scene (with Disney Animation and Disney Pixar leading the way), earning $875.5USD million globally with their film The Secret Life of Pets (see my review here), and $429.7USD million globally with their film Sing.
While these films still haven’t earned as much as their Disney counterparts like last year’s Finding Dory and Zootopia, their return at the box office should still be applauded.
Illumination Entertainment has discovered a recipe for success with these films, as now proven with all the sequels coming out, and their future release schedule is as follows:
- Despicable Me 3 – June 30, 2017
- How the Grinch Stole Christmas – November 9, 2018
- The Secret Life of Pets 2 – July 3, 2019
- Minions 2 – July 3, 2020
- Sing 2 – December 25, 2020
