Independence Day (1996) and 2012 (2009) director Roland Emmerich’s latest feature is a retelling of the epic Battle of Midway, a pivotal event that helped turn the tide in favour of the Allies during WWII.
Headlined by Patrick Wilson, Ed Skrein and Luke Evans, Midway focuses on the heroes of the American Navy and how they managed to combat the superior Japanese forces in one of the most significant battles to take place in the Pacific.
Emmerich’s love of destroying things is evident in the trailer as we see the devastation of the attack on Pearl Harbour, along with the film’s focus, the WWII Battle of Midway.
To be honest, the CGI battles look amazing and are on par with the action seen in Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbour (2001).
Not only are both films set during the same time period, but Midway feels very similar in tone to Bay’s bombastic war flick, so expect lots of things blowing up, well-shot action set pieces and some rather generic dialogue.
While this type of film wouldn’t normally excite, the supporting cast has got me interested, with Woody Harrelson, Alexander Ludwig, Dennis Quaid, Aaron Eckhart, Nick Jonas and Mandy Moore all involved.
Midway will be in cinemas on 8 November 2019.
